ABOUT

IN THE SHADOWS

Death Row Shadows explores the knowledge and education of the criminal justice system. Here in the Shadows, we aim to shed light on communities who would otherwise not be exposed to the rules and regulations that makes up our penal system. By learning how justice is carried out throughout our country, communities can learn how to make it better and fairer. It always starts with education.

Death Row Shadows presents the Hueman Exchange Project, where we bring to the public two different (but related) avenues of education through our “Let’s Trial It Again Series” and the “Let’s Talk About It Series”. Through education, we aim to bring information not readily available to the public. We are working to change the narrative. Will you?

THE FACTS

76
This is the percentage (76%) of people held by jails that have not been convicted of any crime. One major reason is because they cannot afford to post bail.
80
Eighty percent (80%) of women who are incarcerated are mothers who are the primary caretakers for their children. Thus children are predominately susceptible to the domino effect of burdens placed on incarcerated women.
2633
There are approximately 2,632 inmates on Death Row. This number changes daily with appeals, overturns, etc.
10300
The number (10,300) of youth locked up for "offenses" that aren't even crimes. Another 12,000 children are refugees awaiting placement with family or friends.

The Projects

Experience is the basis of all huemans. It shapes our individual perceptions and course throughout our life’s journey. Without understanding our own personal stories and how systemic facts intersect these experiences, we can never move forward to be the change we offer. Death Row Shadows focuses on how the hueman experience is impacted – whether it be by social, individual, or collective means – when dealing with mass incarceration. We want to explore how we can make a permanent change in the lives impacted by mass incarceration. To do so we are introducing different initiatives that tackle mass incarceration and how we as a global community can impact perceptions, actions, beliefs, and outcomes.

IF NOT US, THEN WHO?

The Hueman Exchange Project

The Hueman Exchange Project is currently Death Row Shadows’ focus. We bring to the public three different (but related) avenues of education and experiences through: the “Let’s Trial It again Series”, the “Let’s Talk About It Series”, and our “Lecture Series”. Through these three series, we target different ways of teaching and learning.

LET'S TRIAL IT AGAIN SERIES

This series focuses on felony cases handpicked by a committee of experts. Presented to the public through a mock-trial, communities can form their own conclusions and discuss their experience from the trial. Through immersion, people learn about mass incarceration and it’s immediate effect on individuals. Each trial will focus on different components that contribute to an overall system.

LET'S TALK ABOUT IT SERIES

This series presents multiple events, where guest speakers speak on an overlying topic through personal stories, or studied research. At the end of each event, visitors will be able to discuss the event’s theme with each other and the guest speakers.. Visitors will be able to get information on the justice system and resources that they can use.

LECTURE SERIES

In the Lecture series, Omowale Oladuwa, a death row survivor and former professor, will travel to different cities to give talks on his personal experience and how he has been effected by mass incarceration. Traveling to different venues (schools, community centers, etc.), Omowale will give people a personal and educational look at how lives are impacted by the justice system.
